Five Things to Know About Renting A Wheelchair Van from AMS Vans
Thursday May 17, 2012 -
AMS Vans, Inc. is dedicated to providing our customers with excellent choices for wheelchair van rentals. Whether a side or a rear entry handicap van is preferred, we can help find an accessibility minivan to suit. Each AMS Vans, Inc. wheelchair van offers a variety of features to make mobility easier, and the ride more comfortable and safe. With short term or long term rentals with delivery (additional fees/limitations may apply), renting is convenient and simple. Also, AMS Vans rents wheelchair vans for a trial period before purchase, allowing customers to experience a mobility vehicle before committing to it.
One of our top concerns with any vehicle is safety. No matter how careful a person is, accidents can happen. AMS prides itself on making sure all wheelchair van conversions are as safe as possible for both drivers and passengers. We put all pre-owned minivans in our inventory through a rigorous 125-point inspection process before, during, and after the wheelchair van conversion, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has overseen – and approved – AMS’ crash testing.
Working with the OEM designs, AMS strives to maintain the minivan's original structural integrity as the wheelchair accessibility conversions are performed. By not tampering with the frame of a van, it is more sound. Rocker panels and the B Pillar support are structural necessities for safety. AMS is one of the few handicap van conversion companies that do not alter them for the sake of more interior room.
AMS Vans, Inc. also includes Q’Straint wheelchair safety belts in all mobility van rentals at no extra charge. These help ensure that wheelchairs remain immobile during transit. Even when renting a handicap vehicle, safety is paramount.
2. Side Entry and Rear Entry Vans
The side-entry AMS Legend is available in select models of the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Volkswagen Routan. The rear-entry Edge comes in these same models, as well as the Honda Odyssey. And the EdgeII long channel model is available in the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan.
Side or rear entry accessibility determines how closely the wheelchair occupant may sit near the handicap minivan’s driver, but other important considerations are how narrow your driveway is, or whether the wheelchair user would typically enter or exit the vehicle from a sidewalk. Families tend to prefer the side entry.
Businesses such as non-emergency medical transportation typically utilize a rear entry handicap van, while many accessible taxis prefer to extend their ramp from the side entrance for easier curb accessibility. (Renting for commercial use may have different rules in different states, such as ADA compliance and insurance requirements.)
3. Accessibility Features
Comfort is also important when considering a wheelchair van rental. All of our AMS-brand wheelchair vans can seat at least three ambulatory passengers, standard, with additional jump seats and transfer seats available as an option so the whole family can ride together. Our Legend model can transport up to two passengers in wheelchairs, as can our rear entry EdgeII long channel.
Lowered floors allow easy access in and out of the handicap van, and there is a manual backup safety on motorized wheelchair ramps to allow functionality even if the mobility minivan’s battery fails. All of AMS Vans, Inc.’s wheelchair accessible minivans for rent are low-mileage, newer models that provide greater reliability and comfort.
AMS Vans, Inc. has short term handicap minivan rentals to suit every situation. From our Atlanta, Georgia showroom, customers can rent for as little as one day. From our Houston, Texas location, we ask a one week minimum. Nationwide, longer term wheelchair accessible van rentals are available.
Mobility vehicles can be picked up at our facility, or can be delivered to the renter or a nearby airport (conditions and fees apply). Either way, a professional mobility consultant will be there to instruct the consumer on all the features of the accessible van.
A deposit is not required, but drivers need to be over 25, with a valid driver’s license, full coverage insurance and a clean driving history.
5. Try Before Purchase
Rentals through AMS Vans, Inc. can lead to purchases. We offer a chance for customers to experience a wheelchair vehicle before making the decision to buy. This allows the customer to make sure the handicap van is right for their lifestyle and needs. Purchases made from AMS Vans, Inc. within 30 days of an accessibility rental qualify the purchaser to a discount. Half the cost of the wheelchair minivan rental will be applied towards the handicap vehicle. This can be up to a $2,500 discount!
When thinking about a wheelchair van rental, there are many things to consider. AMS Vans, Inc. provides exceptional handicap minivans, featuring some of the highest-rated safety standards in their class. And our high quality vehicles and professional service make the rental experience a pleasure.
